Apartment for a Music Critic

The owners of an upper west side prewar apartment, a Pulitzer-Prize winning music critic for the New York Times and his wife, a former New York Times editor, contacted BAAO to renovate their living spaces to create a library to house the husband’s music and to showcase a Steinway grand piano.  The wife has a love of animals and the project was designed to artfully contain her two cats.  Notable features include an antique mirrored glass tile wall in the foyer and a full-wall mural of Halong Bay in Vietnam painted by Glenn Palmer-Smith.  Bathrooms and hallways are devoted to bird and squirrel imagery.  A beautiful custom folding set of doors designed and built by Billy Cotton separates the library from the living space.  Contemporary and modern light fixtures by Ochre and Alvar Aalto are interspersed among with the owner’s collection of family oil paintings, antiques, and a goatskin game table by Karl Springer.
